Verizon and RIM Announce BlackBerry Curve 3G

Verizon and Research in Motion (RIM) announced a new 3G version of the BlackBerry Curve today. It will become available on September 16 in business sales channels, and through Verizon in the coming weeks. 

The device comes in charcoal or fuchsia red. Here are the features and specs as noted in the announcement:

 

Nokia Unveils New Family of Smartphones

Nokia has announced a new family of smartphones powered by the new Symbian platform. The devices are integrated with enhanced Ovi services and apps. They are the Nokia E7, the Nokia C7 and the Nokia C6. 

The latest version of Symbian comes with over 250 new features such as HDMI support, multiple personalized home screens, multipoint touch, multitasking and "turbo charged" graphics.

T-Mobile Unveils New Google Phone, G2
T-Mobile unveiled its G2 Google smartphone with 4G. The phone is the first designed for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, which the company says covers 100 million Americans in more than 55 major metropolitan areas across the country. 

The G2 is of course the successor to the G1, which was the first Android-powered phone. It is designed by HTC. It has a 3.7-inch screen and opens to a QWERTY keyboard, and comes with Android 2.2 and a snapdragon MSM7230 mobile processor.

New Smartphones, Tablet on the Way from LG

LG plans to launch 10 new smartphones and sell five million devices by the end of the year. In addition they will launch a tablet by the fourth quarter under the Optimus line. This is all according to the Wall Street Journal.

North Korea has reportedly joined Facebook and according to Valleywag has 65 friends. Meanwhile, it’s being blocked by South Korea.

Another Report Has Android Moving Up Quickly

Mobile ad network Millennial Media released its latest Mobile Mix report this morning. Android is now officially the number 2 OS on Millennial’s network. The Android OS grew another 47% month-over-month. Since January, Android has grown 690%. Android surpassed RIM as the number 2 OS on the network.

Apple ad requests increased 24% month-over-month, but are actually down 15% since January. iPad ad requests grew 327% month-over-month, however.

Voice Actions Come to Android

Google has launched a new Android app for version 2.2 (FroYo), called Voice Actions. The app lets you speak various commands to engage various functionalities of the phone.

With Voice Action, you can initiate the sending of text messages, listening to songs, calls to businesses or contacts, emails, web surfing, and more.

Consumer Reports Recommends Numerous Android Devices

While Apple may have dominated the headlines with iPads and iPhones, 2010 has been a pretty good year for Android. Now Consumer Reports is recommending a variety of Android devices.

Android Headlines points to September’s issue of Consumer Reports, which ranks smartphones. Eight different ones made the "Recommend List" including:

Research in Motion (RIM) announced its latest smartphone today, the BlackBerry Curve 3G. The plan for the device appears to be to win over non-smartphone users.

Google Turns Nexus One Into Developer Phone

Report: Android on 1 in 3 U.S. Smartphones Sold

The NPD Group has released a new smartphone report, finding that Motorola and HTC have driven Android to the lead in the U.S. Android is installed on one in three smartphones sold, according to the group.

Meanwhile, for the first time since 2007, RIM has slid to the number 2 position, as Android took the lead.

While Android accounted for 33% of all smartphones purchased in Q2, RIM accounted for 28%. Apple came in third at 22% with the launch of the iPhone 4.

Motorola Announces Second Quarter Sales of $5.4 Billion

Motorola announced its Q2 financial results today. These include sales of $5.4 billion. The company shipped 2.7 million smartphones during the quarter, but mobile device sales were down 6% from the previous year.

Android Seeing Massive Growth in the UK

It’s no secret that Android usage is on the rise, but Guardian points to research from GfK Retail and Technology indicating that in the UK, Android’s share of the mobile market has grown from 3% in the first quarter to 13.2% in the second.

On top of that, contract market sales grew by less than 1%, while sales of Android phones increased by 350%, the firm says.

Barnes & Noble has introduced Nook for Android. This comes in the form of a free app that lets users read eBooks with customizable font styles. The company says this is the first Android eReader app that lets users share eBooks with friends.

The company also points out that this is the first eReader software to feature its new "NOOK-centric" branding. The app will soon be followed up with updated apps for the iPhone, iPad, and other devices.

Baidu to Compete with Google in the Mobile OS Space Too?

InformationWeek is reporting that Baidu may be looking at developing a mobile operating system, citing Chinese media reports. The project would be led by former Google employees. Meanwhile, TechCrunch says Android is poised to dominate in China.

Opera announced today that Opera Mini 5.1 is now available for Android devices. The company claims this is the most popular browser for mobile phones, and places an emphasis on its speed.

WordPress Introduces Post By Voice

Wordpress has just introduced a new feature that lets you update your blog by calling a phone number speaking. Wordpress users can go to the My Blogs tab, enable "Post by Voice" and get a special phone number to call for their blogs.

Calling the number and recording a message will post an audio file to the blog, which can then be published to Facebook, Twitter, etc. with the Publicize feature.
