Strong holiday sales of Wii and Nintendo DS portable game device allowed Japan’s Nintendo to more than double its quarterly operating profit and to raise its outlook ahead of market expectations.

Apparently the Queen of England has become a fan of Nintendo’s Wii console.

The British tabloid The People reported that the 81-year-old became interested in the Wii console after seeing her 25-year-old grandson Prince William play a game.

Nintendo holiday sales of the Wii game console are off to a "fantastic start" according to a top executive with the company.

Market research firm NPD is reporting that U.S. sales of video game hardware and software increased 73 percent in October.

Total sales reached $1.1 billion, compared with $643 million a year earlier. The Nintendo Wii console moved back into the top spot as the best selling console. Nintendo sold 519,000 Wiis, Microsoft sold 366,000 Xbox 360 consoles and Sony sold 121,000 of its PlayStation 3 consoles.
