The Wii U launched in Europe and Australia on Friday, December 30. It’s been three days now, and analysts are already picking apart whatever data they can get a hold of. The latest numbers from the UK show the Wii U is off to a decent start.
MCV reports that Nintendo sold through 40,000 Wii U units in its opening weekend in the UK. Like in the US, that’s a complete sell out of all the initial stock that was provided to retailers in the UK. Its suggested that sales would have been much higher if Nintendo had supplied the UK with more stock.
There’s no definitive sales number for Europe just yet, but it will be interesting to see if the Wii U’s opening week in Europe and Australia is able to beat out the 400,000 units sold in the US. The UK alone made up 10 percent of that number so it’s not out of the question to suggest that Nintendo had a great weekend in the rest of Europe as well.
Interestingly enough, MCV also reports that the early attach rate for the Wii U is 2:1. That means that consumers are buying predominantly buying two games per Wii U console sold. Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime said that the console is instantly profitable with one game purchase so chances are Nintendo made a killing over the weekend.
Having now launched in the US, Europe and Australia, Nintendo has its sights now set on its home territory of Japan. The console will launch in the country on December 8 with a special Monster Hunter 3 HD bundle that is sure to sell out.
Nintendo still hopes to sell 5.5 million Wii U units by March of next year. The company is off to a good start, but investors have a right to worry. Can Nintendo reach that kind of sales milestone with early adopters alone?
