Strategy Before Tactics

If you have no defined strategy then what ever tactics you employ probably won’t meet your goals. How many of us in the information security business bought a product, tool, policy or process from a company because we needed to meet a legal requirement, a passing interest in a neat new toy, or a recommendation from a group or consultant without really visualizing how it will fit into our strategic and tactical goals for the company?

The Web and artificial intelligence have brought about some surreal, science fiction like questions. The most recent mind-bending concept is whether or not robots can enter into contracts – that is, is a Web crawler implicitly entering a contract posted on a website announcing copyright conditions?

Google Seeks “Flexibility” Through Trendalyzer

For a while, they just came one after another – it seemed like Google was acquiring other companies at the rate of at least one per day.  Now the pace has slowed, but a few hours ago, the search engine company announced another acquisition.  This time, Google has taken on not a company, but a piece of software known as “Trendalyzer.”

Marissa Mayer herself (Google’s “VP Search Products & User Experience,” in case you didn’t know) wrote the blog entry announcing the event and explaining the software.

Google’s Local Search Impresses on “Notary”

We all know Google is cleaning up in the search space, but every so often I’ll check out what the other folks are doing just to see if they are getting close. Today I needed a notary. I work in Palo Alto, so I typed:

NC Town Ready, Waiting For Google’s “Farms”

Stereotypes would have you believe that the Appalachian region is home to nothing other than trees, coalmines, and inbred banjo players.  Google’s not buying into those stereotypes, however, and more details are emerging about the search engine giant’s plans to open a server farm in Lenoir, North Carolina.

Should we Kill the Term “White Paper”?
Does using the words “white paper” create a negative picture in your mind?

Is the term overused?

Yesterday I had the great pleasure of teaching a teleclass with Bob Bly, an author of more than 70 books on writing and marketing.

One student asked the question, “Does it always make sense to call a white paper a white paper?

This is a very good and important question. It spawns a number of other questions.

Bob’s answer was, “I don’t like using the term white paper.”

Twitter to Live, Don’t Live to Twitter

Is all the fuss about Twitter much ado about nothing, as Shakespeare put it?

NCAA Tournament Coverage – Poor Usability

Why is it so difficult for me to get coverage of the college basketball tournament while I’m at work?

After navigating the mess at cbs.sportsline.com to try to watch the games over the live internet feed, (they make it almost impossible to find the link for to watch the games live.) I’ve come to find out that the video for whatever reason doesn’t even work on my Linux box, not to mention crashed my browser several times. I’ve also heard a friend say he can’t get the video working on Firefox either for Windows. He had to use Internet Explorer. HELLO? I wasn’t even aware people still used Internet Explorer.

A Long Time Ago, In a Wiki Far, Far Away

The Star Wars Saga carries arguably the largest fan base of any one particular work of fiction. Fanboys and uber-geeks have made the Internet their platform to engage in endless debates surrounding topics such as the exact specifications of the X-Wing Starfighter to whether or not the destruction of the first Death Star was an inside job.
