Yahoo Announces New Game Plan

Coach, team remain the same

Can the phrase "fresh titles all around" solve anything?  Well, Yahoo appears willing to find out.  A corporate realignment has been announced, but not much meaningful-looking movement is taking place.

First, not a soul is getting fired; Carl Icahn will be sorry to hear that Jerry Yang remains in the CEO position.  No one's getting hired, either, unless a yet-to-be-named Insights Strategy team leader comes from outside the company.

On to the shuffle, then.  Ash Patel, who was in charge of the Platforms & Infrastructure group, will be leading a new Audience Products division.  Hilary Schneider, the former head of Yahoo's Global Partner Solutions group, is becoming responsible for the U.S. region.  Both individuals (along with the Insights Strategy team leader) will report to President Sue Decker.

Elsewhere within Yahoo, cloud computing and storage is supposed to become a bigger deal under the direction of CTO Ari Balogh.

Lastly, there's an indication that an interest in search is still alive.  The company "is putting new leadership in place behind Yahoo!'s search group, naming Prabhakar Raghavan to direct search strategy and Tuoc Luong as the interim leader of the search product team," according to a statement.  "Both Prabhakar and Tuoc will also continue in their roles as the leaders of Yahoo! Research and Search Engineering respectively.  In addition, David Ku will lead the Advertising Technology Group within Search."

A piece of well-meaning advice to these people: put off getting new business cards until after the August 1st board meeting.
