We knew that Google would change and release a lot of things in preparation for the 2008 presidential election, and, well, we were right. Google News recently gained a section titled "Elections" above the old mainstays like "Business," "Sci/Tech," and "Sports."
For people who are fascinated by the American political system, this is obviously good; on the Google News Blog, David Garnick noted, "The U.S. section of Google News covers a broad range of topics that are of interest to a national audience; thus, typically, few stories pertain to elections."
The development may also benefit people who are tired of hearing about the whole thing, though, as it could relieve other areas of Google News of their responsibility for elections coverage. No seeing stuff about the top eight candidates (or however many there are now) everywhere you look, in other words - it might tend to be stuck in the Elections section.
The change to Google News isn't huge, but given the length of time that's left until the election, it will be long-lasting. The change has only been made to the U.S. version of Google News, by the way, so people in other countries who want to view it or Americans who want to avoid it should act accordingly.
