Google’s very much interested in the US wireless spectrum auction, and given the company’s tendency to spread things overseas, it wouldn’t be too surprising if a similar fascination had taken hold in the UK. But according to a Google executive, it hasn’t.
“We’re not preparing a bid and we’re not looking for partners,” said Chris Sacca, Google’s head of special initiatives. I-want-to-believe types may argue about the tense of his statement - perhaps Google will simply start preparing and partnering next week - yet a person can’t be much more blunt than that.
Even Google’s talks with Ofcom, “the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries,” aren’t anything to get excited about. In an interview with Chris Williams, Sacca described them as more of a fact-finding mission than an instance of market positioning.
Still, even if this all comes off as slightly disappointing, Google’s lack of interest is probably just as well; investors have been remarkably tolerant of Google’s left-and-right spending in the US, but if it took to doing the same thing in the UK, they might become a little less happy.
