Though retail sites get about a quarter of their traffic from search engines, they are also increasingly getting traffic from MySpace, perhaps answering some reservations posed about the efficacy of creating a presence in social networks.
Hitwise's LeeAnn Prescott posts that over 3 percent of May visits to shopping and classified sites originated at MySpace, an increase of 86 percent over May 2006.
Prescott notes that the increase could have several explanations: the increase in MySpace visits in general; more advertising presence on the site; or Google search on the site.
As marketers, we're inclined to believe that it was getting the word out to the people where they congregate. Though many were skeptical, it appears that social marketing is beginning to take hold.
It will be really interesting to see how much those percentages increase next year – especially since 2007 will most certainly involve the rise of Facebook.
Most visitors are leaving to go to eBay, according to Prescott's numbers – eBay gets about half a percent of its traffic from MySpace, while all competitors attract MySpacers in the hundredths of percents.
