I had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion at the Search Engine Strategies show in NY all about Social Media Optimization. It was interesting to see how the idea has progressed and search pros are implementing tactics and techniques for social media marketing.
CNET sat down with former CBS news anchor Dan Rather at the recent SXSW conference and got his opinion on everything from blogs to net neutrality. Considering Rather pretty much lost his job at CBS due to bloggers questioning a report on President Bush’s National Guard service record, you’d think Rather would hate bloggers. Interestingly, Rather believes there is room for bloggers as serious journalists.
Over the next week, I'll posting some of the other insights I will be taking from the event, but in the meantime here are just a few marketing ideas that struck me as remarkable or noteworthy from SxSW:
SXSW Liveblogging: Community Ecology: Finding Balance When Working with Fan Groups
"How to best nurture your online community ecosystem in order to avoid fan burnout, maintain balance between community and company goals, and drive business success."
"Many companies are so focused on the goal of building a community in order to exploit it that they skip a crucial step that ultimately hurts their business plan: Collaborating with users/customers to build a product or experience that can dominate the market because it's great. It is possible to strike that balance: Building community, maintaining credibility, meeting organizational objectives.Meet company leaders whose models are steeped in user collaboration -- and who have been working on the ground level themselves."
Alright, Twitter has suddenly attained the status of a notoriously popular Application. After being fueled by SXSW, everybody else is talking about Twitter including those who don’t even have a blog. Talks in the Blogosphere have spit out stats that Twitter got 1 million messages sent recently. Finally after about a year of its launch, Twitter has won.
Irina Slutsky has been working on something fun: The Vloggies Show. This will highlight the interesting video from around the Internet that’s being generated. No, not my show. There’s more to Internet video than videos of geeks. Vloggies is the contest/awards show we ran last fall to highlight best video on the Net.Anyway, at SXSW we’re hosting a booth (Seagate is sponsoring) and we’d love to see you there.
A quick directory of the flurry of SXSW posts from over the weekend.
(very different kind of liveblog vs. the previous session...the wisdom of crowds session was a monologue, this session was a group of about 70 people, and the conversation was truly that, and bounced around the room...trying to capture the salient points of a fast-moving discussion...)
