Companies that haven’t yet given Google TV Ads a shot should consider themselves presented with about 65 million new reasons to do so.  Google TV Ads has connected with the Game Show Network and its 65 million viewers.

To a certain degree, this move makes more sense than other advertising tie-ups.  Game shows often involve money and products that are available for purchase, after all, putting their viewers into a consumer-y frame of mind.

Earlier this month comScore released its Q2 retail e-commerce sales estimates, which indicated that US online retail spending dropped from the same period from last year. This is only the second time that has happened.

Security firm Trend Micro has been researching malicious practices on Facebook, and has discovered numerous rogue apps on the social networking site this week. A federal court in the Northern District of California has upheld a December 2008 judgment which awarded Verizon $33.15 million in a cybersquatting case against OnlineNIC, an Internet domain registration company.

The case is based on OnlineNIC’s attempts to take advantage of Verizon and its customers by using names that are easily confused with legitimate Verizon names.

Americans watched another record number of online videos in July with a total of 21.4 billion videos viewed during the month, according to the latest report from comScore.

WebProNews: How did the idea for the concept of the Twitter documentary come about?

Time Warner Cable announced Thursday it is working with a number of networks to provide its customers with more online access to programming.

The networks involved in the upcoming trials of TV Everywhere include TBS, TNT, HBO, CBS, Syfy, BBC America, AMC, WE tv, Sundance Channel, Discovery and the Smithsonian Channel.

Last month Comcast began a similar test offering content from HBO and Cinemax online.

Comedic actor, Ben Stiller, just recently jumped into the social media game. Sure he’s new to the scene, but he’s already had a few videos go viral. His latest video, Mickey Rooney discusses twitter with Ben Stiller, will certainly become a web favorite very soon.

Hitwise is sharing some data on the performance of Bing News Search, one aspect of Bing that hasn’t had a lot of attention paid to it since Microsoft launched its new search engine. According to Hitwise, Bing News Search has about 2% of the market share in the news aggregators category, at least in the UK.

Facebook has announced plans to give users more control over their information and make them better informed about privacy settings. This includes notifications and information about privacy settings and practices, additions to the Facebook Privacy Policy, and technical changes that give users more transparency and control over the info they provide to third-party apps.

An overseas branch of Google News may be about to get its parent unit in a lot of trouble.  Italian antitrust regulators are investigating claims that newspapers were more or less forced to contribute to the site, and certain tactics and potential penalties suggest the situation is very serious.

1. Fire Gestures

The majority (53.1%) of Internet users belong to at least one social networking site, but the amount of time spent on the sites is somewhat short, compared to overall time spent online, according to a new report from Burst Media.

Among 18-34 year olds, 40 percent spend less than 30 minutes per day on sites like Facebook and MySpace. The top content categories for that demographic actively seek out entertainment news (48.6%), gaming (40.5%), local/national news (37.3%) and social media (35.5%).

Compete has shared some interesting data indicating that web users are increasingly using search engines to simply navigate to the sites they want to visit. For example, they are typing "facebook" in Google rather than just going to facebook.com from their address bar.

Following is a look at the fastest growing search terms according to Compete, for the top five search engines. You’ll notice that this list is largely dominated by brand names.

The company that provides a mortgage product and pricing engine to LendingTree is ready to do the same thing for Google, according to a new lawsuit.  Indeed, LendingTree claims to have screenshots proving that Google is about to get into the mortgage quote business. 

AOL has named Arthur Minson as the company’s new Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

Minson replaces Nisha Kumar, who left AOL earlier this summer. Minson was previously with Time Warner Cable, where he served as Executive Vice President and Deputy CFO and had a hand in helping manage that division’s separation from Time Warner. Prior to his role at Time Warner Cable, Minson led AOL’s Corporate Finance and Development activities.
