Google Adds Moon Data To Earth Software

Corrects doodle oversight, too

Today marks the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, and Google seems to have goofed up the scheduling of a commemorative doodle for its homepage.  But the search giant's arguably made up for that oversight (and then some) by launching Moon in Google Earth.

Moon in Google Earth can, like the Mars and Sky additions before it, be accessed within Google Earth 5.0.  Then, as a post on the LatLong Blog explains, "Each of the Apollo landing missions is chronicled in detail through pictures and stories.  We've even embedded video footage from Spacecraft Films that covers the most well-known moments on the surface."

The post continues, "There are also immersive lunar surface panoramas, composed of photos taken by the astronauts themselves, presented for the first time in a 3D 'Street View' style interface."

Plus you can turn on a Human Artifacts layer, a Historical Maps layer, and a Guided Tours layer.  Something for everyone, as it were.

And finally, with respect to the Google Doodle problem, a picture that doesn't look like it was whipped up in five minutes appeared on Google's homepage at around 3 PM (Eastern Time).
