It shouldn't surprise anyone if MySpace's execs all have the "Jaws" theme stuck in their heads.  Facebook has been creeping up on its rival for some time, and within the next month or so, may finally overtake it in terms of unique U.S. visitors.

The U.S. has long been MySpace's "safe place"; even after it lost battles in the rest of the world, execs could point to their dominance in the large and lucrative American market.  Rupert Murdoch's mood - and corporate morale - can be expected to suffer after MySpace loses this edge.

Nonetheless, the Royal Pingdom blog noted, "Within a month (or two at the most), if the current trend holds, Facebook will have more daily visitors than MySpace in the US according to Google Trends for Websites."

Compete provides a similar outlook, although the window might have to be extended to five or six months according to its data.

In fairness to MySpace, placing second isn't so bad, especially since it'll come more as a result of Facebook's rise than any real descent.  Advertisers who are looking to seize every advantage in a tough market might be swayed by the changeup, though, so the potential for fallout can't be ignored.
