Google Exposes Android To Security Community

Early olive branch

Mobile this and mobile that - the news about Google and cell phone-related stuff just won't stop.  Consumers should benefit, however, as Google is now asking the security community to make sure its Android operating system remains safe.

In a post on Full Disclosure, the Android Security Team wrote, "As you may expect, building and maintaining a secure mobile platform is a difficult task. . . .  While we have found and fixed many of our own bugs as well as flaws in other open source projects, we realize that the discovery of additional security issues in a system this large and complex is inevitable.  That is why we would like to introduce ourselves today and let the security research community know how they can reach out and work with us."

A link to the free Android SDK and emulator follows, as does a link to a security FAQ.  An email address (security_at_android.com) is even provided among some other stuff, demonstrating Google's willingness to reach out and take risks.

Compared to ignoring the sometimes-mischievous security community, this approach seems much more likely to create goodwill.  And it's immeasurably better than calling Android invincible and keeping fingers crossed behind closed doors.

There should remain at least a month or two until the first Android-based phone becomes available to consumers.
