Google Maps Gets Some Tweaks

Better colors, sleeker layout

Go to Google Maps this afternoon, and you're liable to notice that something's different.  The exact changes may not hit you at first - they're admittedly pretty subtle - but Google has performed another round of streamlining redesigns.

Some car guys should appreciate the moves.  You know how turn signal bulbs and reflectors tend to be a less than gorgeous shade of orange?  Well, detail-oriented souls replace those parts, and Google's replaced some orangey tabs with a blue stripe and dropdown menu.  Search options are a bit less easy to find, now, but they certainly look better.

On the Google LatLong Blog, software engineer Neal Kanodia adds, "You might also notice the map is a tad bigger, and that it's easier to get full screen maps."  And better views are what the introduction of backup cameras in sports cars is all about.

This development may not be as exciting as a GPS navigation system, or even, to return to Google Maps terms, the introduction of walking directions.  Still, it counts as a nice upgrade, and shows Google's dedication to its less-profitable products.

We'll let you know if the equivalents of a turbo and lightweight wheels show up.
