Until now, SearchMonkey announcements have had little immediate meaning for non-developers - they simply weren't affected. But the Yahoo Search Gallery is becoming more accessible, and a wide sharing of applications can begin.
SearchMonkey apps go far beyond the Facebook-type zombie and sheep stuff that have caused so much eye rolling. Beta apps already tie useful information from sites like Yelp, Last.fm, and WebMD into Yahoo's search results.
On the Yahoo Search Blog, Amit Kumar also notes, "One third party developer, Marco Vitanza, designed this Infobar, which annotates blogspot.com search results with links to the 10 most recent posts from the corresponding blog." And "[t]his Enhanced Result from HowStuffWorks.com does just what you'd expect; it gives you the basics on how things work, from car engines to the Internet."
Expect even more applications to get added in the next nine days or so, as the SearchMonkey Developer Challenge is continuing until June 14th. Then some of the apps may be selected by Yahoo for widespread testing, or even get assigned permanent roles as part of the company's search lineup.
If you want to play with some apps before all that happens, just click the "customize" option on any page of Yahoo search results and start browsing the gallery.
