German Startups Imitated Tribbles In 2007

Growth hit (at least) a five-year high

We know, we know - it's almost March.  But a story a story relating to what ended a few months ago just emerged, and it turns out that in comparison to 2006, the number of German Internet companies created in 2007 more than tripled.

As always, we feel obligated to point out that simply moving from one to two, or 10 to 20, represents doubling.  German startups operated on a rather higher level, however, with Reuters reporting, "In 2007, 323 new internet firms were registered in Europe's largest economy, up from 97 the previous year, and 50 in 2005 . . ."

Credit for the original fact-finding goes to online magazine deutsche-startups.de, and the editor of this entity stated, "The 2007 boom year won't be topped."

Of course, that could be interpreted in either a positive or negative light, and to add to the confusion, it remains to be seen what sort of success or survival rate those 323 new firms will encounter.  Still, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect some impressive things to come from Germany over the next few years.

Finally, in pretty-much-unrelated news, police in Duesseldorf earned an approving nod.  It seems that broken glass on the streets posed a problem for their dogs' paws, so the cops paid about $90 per set for some protective shoes.
