Acer's Packard Bell Purchase Green-Lighted

EC decides merger not a threat

Taking a break from fining Microsoft, the European Union approved today Acer of Taiwan's purchase Dutch computer maker Packard Bell.

If you think back to 1995 or so, Packard Bell was the affordable computer that was always breaking and your uber-geek friends were always laughing about. That might be why Acer was able to pick up an entire computer company for less than $46 million.

A small price to pay to get a foothold in Europe while fending off Lenovo.

TheEC deemed  that the deal would not be a threat to competition though, citing the presence of HP, Dell, Sony and others.

agreed

I think they will get alot from owning packard Bell.  Maybe they will bring the brand back from when it was popular back in the late 80's and early 90's

Packard Bell

Wow i didnt know they were still around.  That was the first computer I owned back in 1990.  Weird.. Well good for Acer they seem to be moving up in the world from being just sold at Wally World to now starting to buy companies.

acer was right to buy that company

yae its right to purchase the bell company and it gave high competition to the other manufactures

Interesting...I wrote about Acer's Gateway purchase last year, and was so inspired that I rendered my comments in a poem.  If you want a laugh, please check out DIM BULB at: http://dimbulb.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/09/ode-on-a-beige-.html
