Bidding on .asia domains began in Hong Kong today, initially open to businesses with trademarks and government offices.
Buying will be opened up to the general public in February, says the Associated Press.
Asia is part of the digital world not as well-tapped as the West, and these domain names are thought to carry some value for reaching that market, especially English speaking residents.
About this time last year, the dot-eu domain opened up and it didn't go as smoothly as officials had hoped. The scramble led to lots of criticism that domains were being swallowed up by American business speculators at the expense of legitimate European interests.
Time will tell if there will be similar arguments over the .asia domain.
