“The Boxtrolls”, a new animated feature from Laika Studios, isn’t set to release until next fall. But a brief trailer was released this week, and it shows that animated features are becoming more and more accepting of the LGBT community.
The film’s central message–at least according to the trailer–isn’t all that new: families come in all shapes and sizes and colors, and that’s okay. But the way the message is presented, with honesty and a little humor thrown in, is a lovely change of pace.
Laika was also responsible for “Paranorman” and “Coraline” (two favorites around my house), and if that gives any indication of the level of craftsmanship and beautiful artwork we can expect, it’s bound to be a hit. The film is based on the book “Here Be Monsters” by Alan Snow, a gorgeously illustrated tale. Oh, and the voice cast includes Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and Tracy Morgan. Just take my money, Boxtrolls.
