Kristen Bell and beau Dax Shepard have famously said for years that they had no interest in getting married until everyone could get married; that is, until the laws surrounding gay marriage were changed. The couple–who have been together since 2007 and have a daughter, Lincoln–saw things change this year when Prop 8 was overturned in California, and decided when they went to the Beverly Hills County Clerk’s Office to obtain a marriage license to just make it official then and there, without a big fuss.
“I feel like we get enough attention in our daily lives and we just want something sort of private that involves pen and paper,” Bell has said in the past.
The couple made it clear when they got engaged in 2009 that they weren’t in a rush to marry until they could celebrate their day with all of their friends.
“We wouldn’t want to invite all of our friends who don’t have that right to celebrate us, who have that right. We just don’t feel right about that,” Shepard said.
“Like forty percent of our friends are gay and so you don’t want to invite them and be like, ‘Hey sorry,’” Bell added.
Bell and Shepard haven’t spoken publicly yet about their decision, but they have made their feelings for one another very clear.
“He constantly keeps me laughing: when I’m sad, mad, frustrated, annoyed. Regardless of what it is he can lighten the mood. He’ll do anything that the mood requires,” Bell has said. “I can’t get frustrated and that is a very powerful weapon. Comedy is a very powerful weapon. He’s so funny that it’s overwhelming.”
