Facebook has become much, much more than just a social media network over the past couple of years; as more and more integrations take place, people are using the site to log in to other sites and apps and to verify their identity as well as keep up with friends and family. When the site goes down, even for a few minutes, it’s a big deal.
An outage yesterday which affected many and is being touted as “global” had users turning to Twitter to vent their frustrations. Although the site was down for a relatively short period of time for most–around 20 to 25 minutes–it was long enough to create a bit of a panic among its users, and some experienced a total outage for more than an hour. Coming on the heels of a Gmail outage yesterday morning, the event was unwelcome to those who rely heavily on the sites on a daily basis.
Facebook later released a statement about the downtime and apologized for the interruption.
Earlier today we made a change to our DNS infrastructure and that change resulted in some people being temporarily unable to reach the site. We detected and resolved the issue quickly, and we are now back to 100 percent. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Facebook was down almost 20 minutes. For some, these were the most productive 20 minutes of the year.
