  • Inflection AI has launched Pi, a new chatbot designed to take on the likes of ChatGPT, Bing AI, and Google Bard.

Inflection AI was co-founded by Mustafa Suleyman and Reid Hoffman. Suleyman co-founded DeepMind, the company that was acquired by Google and serves as the source of many of its AI innovations. Hoffman co-founded LinkedIn and is a partner at Greylock Partners VC firm.

While OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google have been stealing headlines, Inflection AI has been quietly building Pi, which stands for “personal intelligence.” One of the things that sets Pi apart is a quirky sense of humor.

According to Forbes, Suleyman complained to the chatbot about a gym injury and being nervous about a presentation he had to give. The chatbot expressed sympathy for his injury and asked what the presentation was about. Suleyman said the presentation was about the chatbot, prompting a joke:

“Whoa, wait what?” Pi the bot responds. “Are you being serious, or are you pulling my non-existent leg?”

Inflection AI is striving to deliver a different kind of chatbot, one that is far more personal than OpenAI, Microsoft, or Google’s. The chatbot is geared toward longer conversations, which it remembers, giving it the ability to better know the person it’s interacting with.

“It’s really a new class of AI — it’s distinct in the sense that a personal AI is one that really works for you as the individual,” Suleyman told Forbes.

Pi is now open to all English-speaking users.
