MySpace and 49 attorneys general from across the United States have agreed to a joint effort to promote safety principles to increase teen's online safety.

The Joint Statement on Key Principles of Social Networking Sites Safety include tools, technology education and law enforcement cooperation. The attorneys general called on other social networking sites to adopt the principles regarding online safety.

The principles call for reviewing content, setting teen's profiles to "private" and deleting registered sex offenders from MySpace. The principles also call for dedicating resources to Internet safety education, such as announcements to parents and parental control software.

MySpace will create an Internet Safety Technical Task Force to develop online safety tools and review identity authentication tools. The task force will include Internet businesses, identity authentication experts, non-profit organizations and technology companies.

Chief Security Officer Hemanshu Nigam said, "We thank the Attorneys General for a thoughtful and constructive conversation on Internet safety. This is an industry-wide challenge and we must all work together to create a safer Internet."
