Hotmail Gets a New Round of Feature Upgrades

Microsoft announced that it is rolling out some new features to Hotmail. These include: the ability to track packages referenced in your email from Hotmail itself, chat with Facebook friends, sharing photos more easily with expanded coverage and new features, viewing more videos from inside Hotmail, and organizing and finding important email with subfolders.

Netflix Launches in Canada Without DVDs, Smaller Streaming Catalog

In July, Netflix said it would expand into Canada this fall, and the company made good on that promise as it made the announcement today. This marks the first international expansion of the company.

YouTube announced a couple of new additions to its team. Neither are Feross Aboukhadijeh, the creator of YouTube Instant, who was recently offered a job by the company. 

Google Improves Video Chat Quality with New Gmail Feature

Google introduced a new feature in Gmail Labs today for video chat enhancement. If you turn the feature on, your video chat experience will come with higher resolution. 

Chances are, the feature will be automatic in the future. Google says by using it, you’ll be getting a preview before its turned on for everyone. 

Justin.tv Broadcasting Comes to iPhone

At the beginning of the month, Justin.tv launched its Android app for live streaming. Today, it has updated its iPhone app with similar functionality. iPhone 4 and 3GSs users can broadcast live video from the app over 3G or WiFi.

"We have already seen a 20% increase in daily broadcasters due to new people using Android to broadcast live,"  says Caleb at Justin.tv.

Confirmed: Google Buying Quiksee

Update: Quiksee has confirmed the acquisition. The company says on its blog:

We are delighted to announce that Quiksee has been acquired by Google! 

We’ve learned a lot from our previous work at Quiksee, and we look forward to bringing our  experience, creativity and insight to Google. Both Google and Quiksee share the same innovative  vision, and while we can’t share any future product plans, we look forward to the opportunity to  contribute and do great things together in the future.

Update: We were finally able to get in touch with Feross, who tells WebProNews, "I haven’t actually accepted the YouTube offer yet. We’re still figuring out how this is all going to work out, and nothing’s final yet. However, Chad and the engineers I spoke with were excited about the possibilities."

Boxee Box With Intel Atom Processor Coming Soon

On Sunday, YouTube began a two-day trial of its new live streaming platform, which continues today.

Argentina Becomes 25th Country to Get YouTube

Google has launched YouTube in Argentina, making it the 25th country to have its own version of the site. 

"This means that Argentines will be able to more easily discover local talent like GuadalajaraMan, UESiglo21, farolatino, casiangeles or yoteloexplico, as well as view the most popular and most viewed videos in their country," says YouTube. 

Netflix Makes Deal to Stream First-Run Theatrical Releases

Netflix announced a new deal with Nu Image/Millennium Films today. The agreement will allow Netflix to stream first-run theatrical films to its members. 

Netflix says the deal is an example of how it is moving to expand both variety and timliness of its streaming catalog. The deal is expected to provide five to ten theatrical films per year for Netflix streaming. 

Skype for Windows Gets Ten-Way Video Calling

Skype released an update to Skype for Windows, which allows you to make group video calls with up to ten people. This is in beta. 

 

Justin.tv Broadcasting Comes to Android

Justin.tv has a new Android app for broadcasting live video. This competes with services like UStream and Qik. Unfortunately, it doesn’t let you simply watch Justin.tv content like the iPhone app does. Perhaps that will come later. This is the first Android app Justin.tv has offered.

YouTube Gives Advertisers New Video Exclusion Options

YouTube has announced new video and channel exclusions for advertisers, so they can pick specific videos and channel URLs that they don’t want their ads to appear with.

Last week, Chatroulette was down, displaying nothing but a blank screen and a promise of a quick return. That return didn’t come so quickly, but the site is back now…somewhat.

Cisco Plans to Acquire ExtendMedia for IP Video Management

Cisco announced today that it intends to acquire ExtendMedia, a content management systems provider out of Newton, Massachusetts.

ExtendMedia’s systems manage video content through monetization for pay media and ad-supported business models. Cisco says that with ExtendMedia, it will be able to help service providers deliver multi-screen offerings as the market transitions to IP video.

Boxee Gets a Whole Lot of Indie Films

Boxee announced today that it is adding the foundations of a movie library to go along with its existing TV show library. Boxee is tapping EZTakes, Indie Movies Online, MUBI and Openfilm to add thousands of movies to its offerings.

Most of the movies in the library will be free and ad-supported, Boxee says.

Chatroulette is Down, and is About to Relaunch

Chatroulette is currently not available. The Chatroulette that we’ve all known has apparently just been an "experiment". It will be back today, however, if a message on the site is any indication.

If you go to the site, it says, "The experiment #1 is over now. Thanks for participating. Renewed and updated version of the website will be launched today."

Man Spreads Homelessness Awareness on YouTube

Saturday was Invisible People.tv day at YouTube. InvisiblePeople.tv is a site/project that utilizes social media tools like YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace to spread awareness about the growing homelessness problem.

The channel was featured on YouTube’s home page over the weekend, and YouTube discussed it in a company blog post, speaking with Founder Mark Horvath.

YouTube Charts Show Performance of Popular Videos

YouTube has launched YouTube Charts, a destination for users to see how popular videos are performing.

"What’s the latest in the all-time most viewed video smackdown between Bieber and Gaga? Is David After Dentist pwning Charlie Bit My Finger? Who grabbed more subscribers this month, ShayCarl or Annoying Orange?" writes YouTube Product Manager Matt Darby.

Rounds Brings Engaging Video Chat to Facebook

Rounds (formerly 6rounds.com) has announced the launch of an interactive video chat platform for Facebook Platform. Users have already been using Rounds to video chat in real time while engaging in various social activities and real-time games. Offering it for Facebook obviously opens up the door for a great deal more use, given that Facebook has half a billion users.
