Officially Time to Stop Comparing Myspace to Facebook

Myspace and Facebook announced an integration today that pretty much confirms Myspace is a place for entertainment content more than it is a social network. Myspace users will be able to use Facebook Connect to bring Facebook info, specifically info about entertainment that they "like", into Myspace. The integration is called Myspace Mashup with Facebook. Essentially, it’s just like any other Facebook Connect/like button integration, but is geared towards Myspace’s content library.

Google has released a couple of meta tags it wants news publications to use in order to indicate original and syndicated reporting to Google News. To be fair, the company says it is "experimenting" with the tags, but this seems like an experiment that is destined to fail.

Zynga Launches CityVille On Facebook

Social game developer Zynga, the creators of the popular Farmville and Mafia Wars on Facebook, has launched its latest game called “CityVille.”

Zynga says CityVille is its most social game to date with new features that allow players to build a city, interact with friends’ cities, and build franchise with the help of their friends.

CityVille is Zynga’s first game to launch internationally and will be available in English, French, Italian, German, and Spanish on Facebook at Cityville.com.

 

Google Enters Toolbar Deal With AVG

Chalk up another victory for Google in terms of edging out its competitors.  Today, well-known security company AVG announced that the Google will replace Yahoo as the search foundation of its antivirus and security products.

This is development supposed to "broaden the search functionality of AVG’s Security Toolbar product and real-time Internet security solution, AVG LinkScanner," AVG explained in a statement.

National Unfriend Day on Facebook

Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel’s previously announced National Unfriend Day is here. The premise is that most of our friends on Facebook are not in fact friends at all and should therefore be unfriended. Kimmel says that if one of your Facebook friends doesn’t have your phone number he should be deleted. Do you agree?

Mark Zuckerberg Shares Philosophy Behind New Facebook Messaging System

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke at the Web 2.0 Summit and faced an interrogation from Tim O’Reilly and John Battelle. He spent a good portion of the discussion talking about the new messaging system announced this week. 

He said that Facebook was not looking to build an email product, but more what a "modern messaging system" would be if they started from scratch. "One of the things that is very good to solve with the social graph is spam," he said. "It’s been a classic email problem."

Google Maps Directions Get Facelift

A service that has helped millions of people reach their destinations – and inspired at least one misguided (and lawsuit-happy) woman to take a stroll alongside a highway lacking a sidewalk – has received an overhaul.  Directions calculated by Google Maps are now more colorful, and perhaps more clear.

Fair warning: the new design definitely moves away from Google’s tradition of minimalism.  Bright pictures and dotted lines may accompany the directions for any given route, and it takes a moment to adjust to interpreting them rather than just reading text.

Online Ad Revenue In US Hit Record $6.4 Billion

U.S. Internet advertising revenues hit a record $6.4 billion in the third quarter, an increase of 17 percent from the same period in 2009, according to a new report by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PwC.

“The Internet has transformed consumers’ lives and how they experience entertainment, information and brands,” said Randall Rothenberg, President & CEO, IAB.
