Loretta Lynn made an announcement last night after a show at the Ryman Auditorium that made a lot of people very happy: “Coal Miner’s Daughter” is coming to Broadway, and “New Girl” star Zooey Deschanel is set to star.
Lynn’s popular song of the same name was made into a 1980 movie starring Sissy Spacek and Tommy Lee Jones, which became a cult classic for those of us living in the South. Spacek actually won an Oscar for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn, so it’s sort of curious that it’s taken this long for Broadway to come knocking.
No other details have come forth just yet, but the musical’s producers were behind the enormously successful Legally Blonde stage adaptation, so it will be interesting to see what it becomes. Deschanel is half of the musical duo She & Him and writes her own songs. She joined Lynn onstage last night for a duet of “Coal Miner’s Daughter” as they made the announcement.
“It’s a long way from Butcher Holler to Broadway in New York City,” said Lynn. “I never imagined I’d see ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ on a movie screen, and now I can’t believe it’s going to be on a stage for people to see… I’m going to be right there in the front row. And I know Zooey is going to be great—she sings and writes her own songs just like I do, and we even have the same color eyes!”
How cute is that?
