Have you seen Wreck-it Ralph yet? If you haven’t, you need to go out to the movies this weekend and see it. It’s by far the best animated film of the year. It captures the kind of Disney magic that’s been absent from the studio’s recent films while treating its subject matter with the kind of respect that’s not normally given to it. In short, it’s an amazing film.
With all that being said, I thought the chances of a sequel were pretty slim. It was a pretty self-contained story with not a lot of wiggle room for a new plot. Sure, they could throw the characters into a new scenario, but it just might not work as well. Despite my concerns, it seems that Disney sees its next new franchise as all the players involved have pretty much confirmed a sequel is happening.
Speaking to Movie Hole, stars John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman, alongside director Rich Moore, all said that a sequel would be happening. Reilly humorously quipped that Disney wouldn’t have made all the merchandise that it did if the company didn’t have plans for a sequel.
In even better news, Moore said that he and his team are already kicking around ideas for a sequel. There’s nothing really concrete just yet, but he said that he wants to work Mario into the next film at some point. For those who haven’t seen the film, Mario is noticeably absent while regular Mario villain Bowser was displayed prominently in the film’s advertising alongside other gaming ne’er-do-wells like Dr. Robotnik and M. Bison.
As for a potential plot, Geek Tyrant says that Moore has suggested that the sequel will take place in the world of online gaming. The first film took place completely within the confines of an arcade so it will be interesting to see how they explain the move to online gaming – a space dominated by consoles and PCs.
Regardless of what they do, I’ll be in the theaters day one to see it. Wreck-It Ralph is my favorite film of the year, and I’m sure its sequel will figure out how to outdo its predecessor.
