  • The big news from the most recent Nintendo Direct show was the announcement of the 3DS XL, Nintendo’s newest handheld design. So, now that the 3DS XL has convinced you to buy the 3DS or some variation of it, what games can look forward to? Well, the new system is launching the same day as New Super Mario Bros. 2, but the virtual console is getting some great classics in July that are worth taking a look at especially if you never owned a Gameboy.

As part of a promotion called 8-bit Summer, Nintendo has announced the various Gameboy, NES and Game Gear titles that the 3DS e-shop’s virtual console will be getting. It’s an eclectic collection that will satisfy the needs of any and every kind of gamer. Unfortunately, the company has still not announced anything in the way of bringing the classic Pokemon Gameboy games to the virtual console.

The 8-bit Summer begins on July 5 with the release of The Legend of Zelda on the NES. Nintendo 3DS ambassadors have already had this particular game for a while, but this marks the first time it’s been available for all via the eShop. A week later on July 12 sees the release of Nintendo’s first foray into pinball games based on their characters with Kirby’s Pinball Land. On the same day, the classic Gameboy dungeon crawler, The Sword of Hope II, will also see release.

Keeping in line with resurrecting the Kid Icarus brand, Nintendo will release the Gameboy sequel, Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters, on July 19. On the same date, cult-classic Tumblepop will also be released. For those unfamiliar, Tumblepop is essentially a side-scrolling cartoon version of Ghostbusters where players suck up ghosts and spit them back out at other ghosts.

At the end of the month on July 26, Nintendo will finally bring the game we’ve all been asking for – Wario’s debut on the eShop. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 is the first game to star Mario’s greedy alter-ego in the leading role after being the antagonist in Super Mario Land 2. Here’s hoping this means that Nintendo will make a new Wario game on the 3DS after the disappointing Wario: Master of Disguise.

Nintendo has been regularly releasing Sega Game Gear games on the eShop as well and July will be no different. While they don’t have a date, Nintendo will be releasing Sonic Blast and Sonic Labyrinth on the eShop at some point. Sonic Blast was pretty fun back in the day, but I’m excited to try out Sonic Labyrinth for the first time.

Check out the sizzle trailer for 8-bit Summer and get ready to relive these classics. If you’ve never played any of them before, might I suggest checking out Wario Land and The Legend of Zelda. Both are awesome classics in their own right and should hold you over throughout the summer.
