On Valentine’s Day, Sony gave a sweet gift to gamers (especially those with a strong sense of nostalgia) by releasing an all new Twisted Metal game on the PS3. It follows the tried and true recipe that endeared older Twisted Metal games to millions of fans – crazy characters, car combat, and homicidal mayhem.
Now, in news that will either excite or horrify gamers and filmgoers alike, there is apparently a Twisted Metal movie in the pipeline.
Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures has made a “preemptive 7-figure deal” to develop a live-action film based on the video game series. The deal attaches Brian Taylor as the writer and director of the project. You may know Taylor as the co-director of films like Crank, Jonah Hex, and the upcoming Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Avi & Ari Arad are signed on the produce – you may know Avi as the producer behind the Spider-Man films.
Apparently, the film will follow the “plot” of the game – maniacs engaging in car combat in a fight-to-the-death scenario. Deadline says that the game will feature popular characters like Sweet Tooth, the killer flaming clown that often drives an ice cream truck, as well as Doll Face, the creepy porcelain-faced girl with Bipolar disorder (among other issues).
I’m sure backstories like this one from Twisted Metal: Black will be thoroughly explored in an adaptation:
The man behind the Twisted Metal game franchise, David Jaffe, said this about a possible film on Twitter:
This just in: the recently announce Twisted Metal movie will contain no story. Because from what I hear I hate stories. That is all :).
What do you think? Sound like a good idea? A horrible one? Let us know in the comments.
