Trayvon Martin, the 17-year old Florida boy who was shot and killed by a self-appointed neighborhood watch member for looking suspicious, has become a name associated with injustice and racism. Almost a year to the day that the shooter, George Zimmerman, was acquitted of the killing, an Arkansas woman was arrested for threatening two young boys in the name of the victim.

Yelena Goforth-Buyalova allegedly brought the boys to tears after she told them they deserved “to be treated like Trayvon Martin” after they reportedly threw trash on the stairs in front of her apartment. She later called the police and told the dispatcher the boys “did not deserve to live in the apartments and they should be in prison because they were black.”

Goforth-Buyalova says that the responding officers made up the comments in their report. She was arrested for disorderly conduct and harassment.

On Saturday, the Martin family held a rally in honor of Trayvon on the anniversary of Zimmerman’s verdict. Their Trayvon Martin Foundation aims to create awareness about violent crimes and to support the families who are left to grieve, and Martin’s parents spoke at the rally along with several celebrities, including Kobe Bryant.

“Our responsibility is more than putting a ball in a basket, but giving them the platform to voice these inspirations,” Bryant said.
