I still haven’t seen Men in Black 3 yet. I was a big fan of the first film, but the sequel was a major letdown. That being said, I did always enjoy the design of the films. The aliens and their weaponry was always creative and unique. The third film apparently featured even crazier weaponry that was made possible through the power of 3D printers.
San Francisco-based Moddler was tapped to create the guns that would be used in Men in Black 3. They recently put up a gallery on their site that features the 3D printed prototypes they created for the film. The designs are unlike anything I’ve seen come out of a 3D printer before. The attention to detail is astonishing.
Here’s a video featuring the guys at Moddler and their awesome 3D printer:

Moddler makes some of the most impressive 3D printed objects in the industry. Unfortunately, the average person won’t be able to get their hands on that kind of technology. The 3D printer that Moddler uses costs $250,000. The best most of us can do is Makerbot or RepRap which only costs about $1,000.
Even so, the smaller 3D printers are still rapidly advancing. It probably won’t be long before we’re able to create advanced plastic models of our favorite products. There might even be a huge demand for 3D printed board games in the near future.
