  • With Breaking Bad coming to a close, AMC is now weighing its options and betting on spinoffs. The cable channel last week announced that a Breaking Bad spinoff centered on Bob Odenkirk’s sleazy lawyer character Saul Goodman. Now, AMC’s other hit show is getting its own spinoff.

AMC today announced that a spinoff for The Walking Dead is in the early stages of development. AMC studios will produce the show, and Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is on board as a producer. The studio estimates that the show should be released sometime in 2015.

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe,” said Kirkman over on an AMC blog post about the new show. “The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

Little else about the upcoming spinoff was revealed, though AMC president Charlie Collier did say that it will have an “entirely new story and cast of characters.” The setting will be the same as that seen in The Walking Dead, presumably with the undead still wandering around the ruins of society. Breaking away from the story in The Walking Dead comics is not a new idea. The Walking Dead adventure game did just that last year and was lauded by critics as one of the best video games of 2012.

The fourth season of The Walking Dead is set to premiere next month, on October 13. The show’s third season will also be hitting Netflix on September 29.
