We heard word today that Bethesda is giving new life to Quake 4 on the Xbox 360 in June. It was pretty awesome news, but Sony just blew that announcement out of the water by making many fans’ dreams come true. The Legend of Dragoon is back and will be hitting the PSN on May 1.
For those who never had the pleasure of playing one of the best JRPGs on the PlayStation, The Legend of Dragoon was Sony’s answer to Final Fantasy. Shu Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, took to the PlayStation blog to reminisce on the legendary title. He says that the game began development in 1996 alongside Ape Escape and ICO. It wasn’t until 1999 that the game was finally released in Japan with a 2000 launch for the U.S.
The Legend of Dragoon was an absolutely massive game spanning four CDs. It had copious amounts of full-motion video featuring full voice acting. The team making the game consisted of over 100 people. Yoshida was personally involved with the development of the title in both Japan and the U.S. It was here that the team rebalanced the gameplay which saw the U.S. receiving the complete version of the game.
Of course, a release of the original PSone classic can’t compete with an announcement for a new game in the series. That unfortunately looks like it wont happen as Yoshida says development for a sequel was underway, but was canceled mysteriously. The team members eventually drifted apart to different projects making the prospects of a sequel even slimmer.
Still, the release of the game on the PSN can only mean good things. If enough people buy it and express interest, Sony may get the team back together again to create a new entry in what still is one of the finest RPG experiences you can find anywhere.
Check out a few of the trailers for it. It may be a PSone title, but the game’s visuals and stories still hold up incredibly well. It doesn’t hurt that the battle system was incredibly fun as well.
The Legend of Dragoon will launch on May 1 for the PSN. No word on pricing yet, but RPGs tend to cost $10. That’s still a steal for the amount of content the player gets with this game.
The response on Twitter has been explosive. The game had quite the impact when it was released on the PSone where many people still consider it to be the best RPG released on the system.
