  • Steve Martin was awarded an honorary Oscar for his years in the film industry. He, along with Angela Lansbury, Angelina Jolie and costume designer Piero Tosi received awards at the fifth annual Academy Governors Awards ceremony on Saturday. Jolie received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, while the remainder of the honorees received honorary Academy Awards.

Held at The Ray Dolby Ballroom of the Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, the event awarded Martin with something he knew he would never receive.

“I just really gave up on that thought over 20 years ago,” he said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I really did. I just thought, “This is not really comedy’s world.” And, I never gave it another thought.”

Steve Martin, Angela Lansbury, Angelina Jolie and Piero Tosi were both lauded and entertained by Tom Hanks and Anthony Hopkins in front of a star-studded audience. Martin got laughs from the audience, too, for jogging to his seat following his introduction.

Martin is best known in the film world for his movies The Jerk, All of Me and Roxanne. He also starred in the remake of Father of the Bride and its sequel, Father of the Bride 2. A Saturday Night Live guest star and frequent host, he has entertained with his comedy–not to mention his spectacular banjo playing skills–for decades. He is truly deserving of this honor he received on Saturday. Congratulations are certainly owed Angelina Jolie, Angela Lansbury and Piero Tosi, too.
