Since the announcement was made yesterday that Disney has bought LucasFilms, rumors have been flying around the web, with Twitter blowing up at the mere mention of a new Star Wars film. Obviously, with the level of love hardcore fans have for the series, you can imagine that the news is being met with some trepidation–especially after the last trilogy.
But with that wariness comes the hope that Episode 7 will be really, really good; that it could encompass the stories of Luke, Han, and Leia as they were told in the Thrawn Trilogy, a series of books written by Timothy Zahn.
“Of all the speculation out there about the content of this new trilogy, that’s the single most concrete idea,” said Eric Geller of TheForce.net. “It’s almost inevitable that the story will take place in the same time frame as those books.”
But writer Leslie Gornstein says that she has word from LucasFilm that the story will be entirely original; in other words, something fans have never seen or imagined before.
With an estimated release date sometime in 2015–alongside the sequel to “The Avengers”–fans will just have to wait to find out more details. For now, word is out that Lucas won’t have a hand in the production or direction of the movie, but there is currently no one else attached to it.
“I felt that I really wanted to put the company somewhere in a larger entity which could protect it,” Lucas said. “Disney is a huge corporation. They have all kinds of capabilities and facilities, so that there’s a lot of strength that is gained by this. I’m doing this so that the films will have a longer life, and so that more fans and people can enjoy them in the future. It’s a very big universe I’ve created and there are a lot of stories that are sitting in there.”
