Last month, Sherri Shepherd filed for divorce from her husband Lamar Sally, just a few short months before their child was to be born via surrogate.
Now, for the first time, Sherri has broken her silence on her current situation and explained to US Weekly at the Samsung Hope for Children Gala in NYC, on Tuesday, June 10, how she is coping with the changes in her life.
“I say you can’t beat yourself up,” The View co-host said. “When you know you’ve made the wrong choice in a guy… you look, you do some introspective work, and you try not to make the same mistake.” She added, “If you do, get back up, dust your feet off, and start walking and moving forward.”
Shepherd already has one child, an eight-year-old son Jeffrey, from her previous marriage to Jeff Tarpley. She and Sally had only been married for three years before she abruptly filed for divorce on May 2, 2014. Sherri requested full legal and physical custody of the unborn baby, due sometime this summer.
While the split hasn’t been easy on Sherri, she credits her close group of friends, including her co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, for helping her through this time. “Have really good friends around you, so you have a soft landing place,” Shepherd said. “I have really amazing friends.”
Sherri says that she hopes things will settle down soon because she doesn’t want her children seeing her break down. “When the dust settles, you figure out what went wrong—but as long as you’re alive and you can breathe, you [can] get up and keep going,” she said. “For me, my child can’t afford to see Mommy having a nervous breakdown. It’s not in the cards.”
