Selena Gomez has been tapped to perform at the halftime show during the Cowboys/Raiders game on Thanksgiving day. The 21-year old pop star says she’s excited, but is a little nervous because she wants to make sure she does her home state proud.
“I’m so excited to be here,” Gomez said. “I’m from Texas, so I’m a little nervous, I’m not going to lie. But I’m very honored and I hope that we come — me, my dancers and my band — and we give Texas a really good show and I make them proud.”
The performance is part of a collaboration between the Dallas Cowboys and the Salvation Army and will kickstart their annual campaign to raise money for the holidays. Last year’s performer was Kenny Chesney, and the organization was able to raise $148.7 million; however, they don’t expect to see numbers that high again simply because last year there were five more days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. But even operating with a time disadvantage, the Salvation Army says they are excited to have someone like Gomez to help start off the fundraising efforts.
“Selena certainly is committed,” Ron Busroe, the Salvation Army’s community relations and development secretary, said. “I mean, with her work with UNICEF, her work in trying to bring awareness particularly to children around the world, fits in perfectly with the Salvation Army.”
Gomez is the cover girl for Teen Vogue this month, and although she was in a serious relationship with hard-partying pop star Justin Bieber for years, she says that’s not her style. Bieber made headlines earlier this week when he was spotted leaving a brothel; Gomez says she could never be the type of person who has a one-night stand.
“I’ve tried it, and I’ve never been that girl. I’m always going to be the girl you want to take home to your parents, not for the night,” she said.
