Selena Gomez likely shocked fans–especially those who remember her as a Disney Channel star in The Wizards of Waverly Place–by posing topless for her new album. The “Good for You” singer says it’s all part of growing up, and of the perception fans should have of her now. Her new album, “Revival,” is indicative of a whole new Selena.

“It’s not something where I’m like, let me glorify what I do in the bedroom. But I think I have a very healthy perspective on my sexuality,” she said in a recent interview with Refinery. “It’s part of being an adult, and I’m still figuring out how to be one of those, too.”

Just one of several female stars who got their start with Disney, then turned to more grown-up ventures, Selena Gomez reflects on Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato–and how they all did things differently.

“Everyone has found their identity in a really interesting way,” she says of Lovato and Cyrus. “We didn’t come out as these robots that looked and dressed the same. We had to go through our own shit. At the end of the day, it’s respecting every female artist’s choice in how she expresses herself, because that’s what she wants.”

Someone who no doubt loves Selena Gomez’s new topless photos–but lives in a perpetual world of “too-little, too-late,” former boyfriend Justin Bieber even played a significant role in Selena growing up. Gomez says none of what the tabloids reported was as bad as it seemed.

“Of course I got my heart broken,” she says. “Of course I was pissed about it.”

“At this point, there is no anger. There’s closure in a very good, healthy way. We’ve seen each other. I’m always encouraging and I am proud of his journey. I think people are making it out to be something that is more tragic than it really was. We grew up together. We both made mistakes. That’s it.”

Selena Gomez currently serves as a mentor on The Voice. She recently shared with the media that she suffers from lupus, and that while tabloids reported she was battling drug problems back in 2014, she was undergoing chemotherapy treatments and sick as hell.

Selena Gomez has blossomed into a smart, talented, and yes–very sexy–young woman. She has done so tastefully, unlike at least one of her Disney counterparts. If the need to pose topless for her new album helped Selena emerge as an adult in the music world, so be it. She’s no doubt just starting to show off what she is capable of doing and who she is capable of being.
