Scott Sterling, son of L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling, was found dead in his home on New Year’s Day, and investigators say the cause could have been a drug overdose.
Sterling, 32, had not been seen by friends or family for at least two days before his body was found. Officials are still investigating the details of his death and have not released the name of the person who called authorities. It is being investigated as an accidental death.
The billionaire’s son has a history of violence, most notably in 1999 when he allegedly shot his friend Philip Scheid with a shotgun. The two were reportedly in a dispute over a girl, actress Lindsay McKeon, but Sterling insisted to police that he had fired in self defense. Scheid was deemed not to be a credible witness (he was shot in the back) and prosecutors eventually dropped the charges. However, the Daily News reported that Donald Sterling used his influence to threaten and intimidate a detective beforehand, which may have swayed the outcome.
Donald Sterling hasn’t issued a statement on his son’s death as yet.
