Due to a recent controversy that involved Scarlett Johansson and an advertisement for the company Sodastream, she is being forced to step down as the ambassador for Oxfam.
Oxfam is a humanitarian group, and she will end her relationship with the group after supporting an Israeli company that operates in the West Bank.
SodaStream has come under fire from pro-Palestinian activists for maintaining a large factory in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, and as a result, Scarlett Johansson has been highly criticized for her connection with the company. For those that are unaware, the West Bank is a territory that was captured by Israel in 1967, and claimed by the Palestinians.
Scarlett Johansson has been voted the sexiest actress on multiple occasions and in addition to being a singer which some people may not be aware of, she is one of the actresses that has been in high demand in recent years. In the past year, she was in in Don Jon and voiced the operating system that fell in love with Joaquin Phoenix in Her.
Earlier this month, the actress signed on as the first global brand ambassador for SodaStream International, a company that makes at-home soda makers. She is set to appear in an ad supporting SodaStream that will air during the Super Bowl on February 2nd. The ad has also faced controversy for the actress appearing “too sexy” for television.
After being highly criticized, she was forced to respond and address the issue, making a statement that included her saying that she is a supporter of economic cooperation and social interaction between a democratic Israel and Palestine.
Scarlett Johansson also released an additional statement through her spokesman on Wednesday that said “Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years. She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fundraising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam.”
The 29-year-old actress had served as a global ambassador for Oxfam since 2007, and traveled all over the world to to highlight the impact of traumatic disasters and chronic poverty.
Through her time as the ambassador, Scarlett Johannsson helped the group in a variety of ways which included raising funds and promoting awareness about global poverty.
