Comedienne Sarah Silverman is set to join the cast of the Showtime period drama Masters of Sex.
Silverman, who received an Emmy nomination for her Comedy Central show The Sarah Silverman Program, will take on the guest star role of “Helen.”
Masters of Sex features Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan as famed pioneering sex researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson.
American Horror Story cast member Danny Huston will play Dr. Douglas Greathouse, the privileged head of a hospital’s obstetrics department. Caitlin Fitzgerald, Teddy Sears and Annaleigh Ashford also star in the show.
The first season of Masters of Sex received Golden Globe and WGA nominations and was named one of AFI’s top TV programs of the year.
Silverman appears in Seth MacFarlane’s upcoming feature A Million Ways to Die in the West. She is also romantically linked to Sheen.
Silverman is also slated to host a variety comedy show pilot developed by Xbox, which will begin to create its own original content.
Xbox users are able to stream shows and movies through their consoles with the use of Netflix and Hulu, but soon they can watch original Xbox content. Silverman’s show is one of a dozen in the works for the company.
“Microsoft has a long and rich legacy in the content business,” said Jordan Levin, executive vice president of Xbox Entertainment Studios. “Games have been part of our DNA for at least the last 15 years, and creating original TV content is a logical next step in our evolution.”
In addition to the comedy show, Xbox Originals is also developing two projects based on the Halo games, and a six-part documentary series, Signal to Noise.
Xbox Originals also plans to provide live coverage of events, beginning with a live stream on June 13 of the 13th Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.
