Another week brings us another claim of bullying in football. This time, college player Jevon Tyree is saying he quit playing for Rutgers because an assistant coach was verbally abusive. This new bullying case comes to light as Dolphins player Richie Incognito was suspended for allegedly harassing a teammate to the point that he left the team.

Tyree, 19, and his parents claim that Rutgers defensive coordinator Dave Cohen called Tyree names, including “p***y” and “b**ch,” and threatened to head-butt him back in April.

“He was just trying to really make me feel as if I was soft,” Tyree said. “He got all up in my face. Coach Cohen has a lisp, so he was in my face telling me he’ll head-butt me, and he was kind of spitting in my face as he was saying it. I was just pulling my head back, looking at him like, ‘Is this guy out of his mind? Is he crazy?'”

The incident was brought to head coach Kyle Flood’s attention and Cohen was verbally reprimanded and forced to apologize the next day. Tyree says he felt “ostracized” because of what happened and decided to quit the team earlier in November.

“Basically, my dad went in there and told Coach Cohen there’s going to be no more bullying towards me,” Tyree said. “Basically that’s what it was–I was just bullied by him for no reason.” Tyree also said that he was excluded from team meetings and that the coaches wouldn’t play him at cornerback after the starter was injured–they played a wide receiver instead.

Jevon Tyree stayed on with Rutgers for a few more months. He quit shortly after a dispute between his parents and athletic director Julie Hernann. Tyree’s parents decided they wanted the issue reviewed again in September. According to Hernann, they approached her regarding the incident with Cohen, but the Tyrees said they only talked to Coach Flood.

“I never talked to her. That is insane,” Mark Tyree said. “My mother has passed and I would put my hand on a stack of Bibles in her goodness. That’s ridiculous that she would even say that. That’s scary.”

During an interview Hermann said, “I’m sorry he doesn’t remember that. I was informed about what happened, what they say happened, and we investigated it. Again. Reviewed it. Kyle Flood reviewed it. That incident pre-dates me…It was dealt with then by Coach Flood…And we have not had an issue since then.”

Now that Jevon has voluntarily left the team, the Tyrees want disciplinary action brought against Cohen. “I really think disciplinary action should happen, almost to the point where (Cohen) should get fired. I really do,” Mark Tyree said. “That’s how bad it is, especially for the damage he’s done to Jevon.”
