  • Russel Brand turned himself in to the New Orleans Sheriff’s office yesterday afternoon, in response to the news that a warrant was out for his arrest.

Brand was booked on two misdemeanor counts of simple damage to property, charges that carry a fine of $700. Brand paid a $5,000 bond and was sent on his merry way.

The warrant stemmed from an incident on Monday, when Brand took a paparazzo’s iPhone out of his hand and threw it through the window of a nearby law firm. Brand had this to say about the incident:

Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory.(image) 1 hour ago via Twitter for iPhone ·  Reply ·  Retweet ·  Favorite · powered by @socialditto

Paparazzo Timothy Jackson filed a police report following the episode. Brand paid for the window ($240) and Jackson got his phone back, but the police issued the criminal warrant none the less.

Brand isn’t the only celebrity to get in trouble after grabbing an iPhone out of someone’s hand. Chris Brown was involved in a similar incident, when he grabbed a Florida woman’s iPhone and drove off with it. Brown was charged with “robbery by sudden snatching.”
