  • 62-year old Robin Gibb, one of the founding members of the disco supergroup the Bee Gees, has died after a long and drawn-out battle with colon and liver cancer.

Gibb lapsed into a coma earlier this year after contracting pneumonia and for a while his outlook was grim, but doctors actually began to show hope for a recovery when he woke up in late April and began to show signs of improvement. However, the amount of nutritional and physical rehabilitation it took to try and get Gibb on the road to wellness proved to be too much for him, and he passed away today in a London hospital. His family released a statement regarding his passing:

“The family of Robin Gibb, of the Bee Gees, announce with great sadness that Robin passed away today following his long battle with cancer and intestinal surgery. The family have asked that their privacy is respected at this very difficult time.”

The Bee Gees were a force to be reckoned with in the ’70s, as the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack hit a fever pitch on the charts and rocketed them to stardom. Robin worked most recently on a project for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic with his son R.J., but unfortunately he was in the hospital around the time it was released and was unable to do promotion for it. The music of the Bee Gees was recently celebrated on the hit Fox show “Glee”.
