Robbie Knievel, the daredevil son of daredevil legend Evel Knievel, was arrested last Tuesday for a death-defying act of mind-blowing stupidity: He drove an RV through Sturgis, South Dakota, with .228 blood-alcohol content. He was busted after driving his RV into two other RVs, then driving away. When police caught him, he was sitting behind the wheel, texting.
The content and recipients of those texts are not yet known, though a text reading “i just jumped my rv over 15 rvs and man i am so drjunk lol” would be fun to report.
Granted, drunk-driving an RV in a town known for its motorcycle enthusiasts isn’t all that daring. Knievel doesn’t seem too worried, though. “I’m a friggin’ drinking, driving daredevil,” he told TMZ. “I ride motorcycles and I friggin’ drink and ride … that’s my deal.” To make sure his point was clear, he added, “I have an alcohol problem. I’m a cowboy. I’m not a redneck. But I love whiskey.” (It should be stated that actual cowboys and rednecks tend not to follow TMZ.)
Knievel was booked and released. His driver’s license has been suspended for 30 days, and he has been ordered to pay $600 in fines, though those fines presumably do not include damage to the vehicles Knievel hit during his spree.
Robbie Knievel, like his father, is best known for jumping motorcycles over stuff. He has recreated a number of his father’s signature jumps, including jumping the Caesar’s Palace fountains in Las Vegas, which Evel had failed to do in 1967 but which Robbie successfully completed in 1989. In 2008, Knievel came under fire for appearing to jump the Mirage Hotel and Casino’s “volcano,” though the appearance of jumping the volcano was a creation of clever camerawork. He has also hosted a show on A&E (former home of such mini-series as “Horatio Hornblower” and “The Magnificent Ambersons”) titled “Knievel’s Wild Ride.”
