Two and a half weeks on from its debut in North America, the PlayStation 4 has now sold through to over 2.1 million customers worldwide. The announcement was made today over on the PlayStation blog by Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House.
This new figure more than doubles the one million PlayStation 4 consoles that Sony announced it had sold on its November 15 launch date. The new console has now launched in 32 countries around the world, with Europe and Latin America having been added just this past weekend. Estimates placed sales of the PS4 at 250,000 in the UK alone.
House used the announcement to thank gamers and emphasize that he and Sony have committed to making the PlayStation4 “the best place to play.” From the announcement:

I want to personally thank PlayStation fans, both old and new, for your vote of confidence. The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. Sony’s new sales announcement will undoubtedly add fuel to console war arguments in the weeks to come. Microsoft was able to match Sony’s day-one sales with one million Xbox One sales of its own in 13 separate launch markets. Sony is now on-track to sell over 3 million PlayStation 4s during its first month of availability – an impressive manufacturing feat more than anything else. A similar sales announcement from Microsoft next week will mean that the Xbox One is keeping pace with PS4 sales and that another generation of highly competitive consoles is coming. The lack of an announcement from Microsoft could also hint at the opposite.
