Today Sony officially launched its PlayStation 4 console. Gamers in countries across the world today will be switching on their new consoles and playing launch titles such as Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, and Resogun.
The PS4 represents Sony’s attempt at luring gamers back to its consoles after Microsoft’s Xbox 360 managed to challenge its console market dominance. Since the PS4’s reveal in February, Sony has been playing on gamer nostalgia with ads reminding gamers of the days of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2. The company also focused almost exclusively on gaming – a different strategy from Microsoft, which is targeting a broader segment of consumers with TV features.
That marketing tactic held through last night, when Sony held a televised, hour-long launch event at The Standard hotel in New York. The event, which can be seen in its entirety below, was full of game previews, developer interviews, and even a few reveals for exclusive PS4 content. Some of the highlights include the Infamous: Second Son release date, a PS4-exclusive Metal Gear Solid V mission, and the reveal of a new Uncharted game for PS4.
