Perplexity AI has made a surprise announcement, saying the company plans to reinvent the web browser with a yet-to-be-released web browser named Comet.
While Google’s Chrome has the largest chuck if the web browser market, there is still a healthy ecosystem of third-party browsers. Each of them offers something that Chrome does, such as better privacy, improved security, a different rendering engine, or better integration with a given platform.
In a post on X, Perplexity makes clear it is throwing its hat in the ring, with Agentic Search being the defining feature of its web browser.
In a statement to TechCrunch, Perplexity said it plans to reinvent the browser.
“Just like Perplexity reinvented search, we’re also reinventing the browser,” a Perplexity spokesperson told the outlet via email. “Stay tuned for updates.”
AI is commonly seen as the technology most likely to disrupt traditional search and threat Google’s monopoly. OpenAI has already launched its own search engine in a direct challenge to Google, but Perplexity’s approach could offer similar benefits at a fraction of the cost or risk.
Ultimately, many consumers use their web browser to find the answers to their questions, relying on search engines for the bulk of the work. By combining AI directly into the browser, Perplexity could put itself in a position to completely kneecap Google Search, OpenAI’s SearchGPT, and others, giving customers the ability to find what they’re looking for before they ever make it to a search engine.
