Nina Dobrev shocked a good number of her fans when she announced recently she is leaving The Vampire Diaries. Even though she will appear on the show throughout season six, she won’t be returning next season.
In a goodbye to her Vampire Diaries cast, crew, and fans, Nina Dobrev indicated that she always felt Elena Gilbert’s story was meant for a six-season run.
“I always knew I wanted Elena’s story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime. I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there’s still so much more to come before the season finale in May,” Nina Dobrev wrote in the following Instagram post that features a photo of her with show runner Julie Plec.
Hollywood Life reports that Nina Dobrev is leaving The Vampire Diaries for a reason that goes way beyond her feelings about Elena Gilbert. In fact, they say she’s leaving because of Ian Somerhalder. The two were an item for quite some time, and he has since moved on with Twilight star Nikki Reed. The two are engaged, in fact, and actively planning their wedding.
“The reason Nina quit The Vampire Diaries is because she finds it too awkward to be on set with Ian now that they’ve split. She’s known since June that she was going to quit the show and that the 6th season would be her last. Especially when Nikki [Reed] and Ian got engaged in December–that solidified her decision. It’s not about Nina pursuing bigger roles. It’s just because she can’t stand to work on set with Ian every day,” a source tells them.
Do you think Nina Dobrev is telling the truth about her reason for leaving The Vampire Diaries or do you think it really does have something to do with Ian Somerhalder?
Either way, fans are going to miss Elena. Will The Vampire Diaries make it without Nina Dobrev?
