This morning, a shooting took place at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. Details are still scarce, but people still have plenty to say about the event. One such person is Russian government official Alexei Pushkov.
Pushkov, a member of the Russian parliamentary foreign affairs committee, tweeted out this morning that the shooting was caused by American exceptionalism. Here’s what he said via Google Translate:
“New shooting at the Naval Staff in Washington – the lone shooter and 7 of corpses. No one is surprised. Visual confirmation. American exceptionalism.”
“The USA should part with the notion of American exceptionalism. It contradicts the principles of equal rights and smells of political racism.”
After news of Pushkov’s comments spread, Americans sent a barrage of tweets back at him referencing Russia’s own history of violence. After receiving those tweets, Pushkov pushed back with more:
“”Exceptional” Americans! Some of you have just proved that you are really exceptional – first of all, by your level of hatred and animosity.”
His latest tweet has yet to receive any responses, but it probably won’t be long before people start to engage Pushkov in more Google Translate-fueled arguments.
